Dumont Walker is running for Georgia State House District 46, a district that spans northeastern Cobb County and southeastern Cherokee County, covering communities in and around Marietta and Woodstock. A marketing and communications professional with nearly two decades of nonprofit work, Walker is running as a husband, a parent, and a neighbor who has been listening to what families across the district are up against. As North Georgia CAN evaluates candidates ahead of the fall election season, we asked Walker where he stands.
Building an Economy That Works for Everyone
Walker's top priority centers on the rising cost squeeze that working families across the district are feeling.
"Too many people across Cherokee County are doing everything right and still falling behind because the rising cost of healthcare, housing, and basic necessities outpaces wage growth," he said.
His first concrete action would be pushing for Medicaid expansion in Georgia. "This is a direct way to lower costs, expand access to care, and bring billions of our federal tax dollars back into our communities instead of leaving them on the table," he said.
Walker also plans to build a permanent structure for community input into his work as a representative. He intends to host regular district listening sessions, form a community advisory group composed of workers, parents, and small business owners, and partner with local organizations to bring those voices into the policy process. "The people closest to the challenges should help drive the solutions," he said.
Underfunded Schools in One of Georgia's Fastest-Growing Districts
When we asked Walker what problem is not getting enough attention, he pointed to the strain on public schools in a district that keeps growing while resources stay flat.
"A local issue not getting nearly enough attention is the real impact of underfunding our public schools, especially as recent budget decisions continue to strain local resources," he said. "We're one of the fastest-growing districts in the state, yet our schools are being asked to do more with less."
He described what that looks like in practice: larger class sizes, overextended teachers, and fewer resources for students. For Walker, this is both a personal and a practical concern.
"This matters to me as a parent raising my children here in this community," he said. "I want them, and every child, to have access to a high-quality education that prepares them for the future."
He frames school funding as an economic issue as much as an educational one. "Strong schools attract families, support property values, and help build a workforce that keeps Cherokee competitive," he said. "If we're not willing to fully fund our schools, we put that entire system at risk."
Why This Matters for This District
HD 46 sits at the intersection of two fast-growing communities with real stakes in both school funding and healthcare access. A representative who arrives with a plan to expand Medicaid, bring community voices into the process, and fight for full school funding is the kind of leadership this district is built for.
